How to Get Slime Out of Clothes, Carpet and Hair

Slime accidents happen. These are general household tips for getting slime out of fabric, carpet and hair. Every material is different, so always try a method on a small, hidden spot first and follow the care label.

First: act quickly and remove what you can

The sooner you deal with slime, the easier it comes out. Gently pull or scrape away as much as possible with your fingers or a blunt edge such as a spoon. Coloured slimes can leave dye behind if left to sit, so it's worth treating the spot straight away.

Slime on clothes

  1. Scrape off as much slime as you can.
  2. Soak the spot with white vinegar, which helps loosen slime, and let it sit for a few minutes.
  3. Gently rub the fabric together or use a soft brush to work the slime loose.
  4. Rinse with warm water, then wash the item as usual following its care label.

Check the spot before putting the item in the dryer. Heat can set any leftover slime or colour, so repeat the steps if needed. For delicate fabrics such as silk or wool, test on a hidden area first or ask a dry cleaner.

Slime on carpet or furniture

  1. Pick off as much slime as you can.
  2. Dab a little white vinegar onto the spot and leave it for a few minutes.
  3. Blot (don't rub) with a clean cloth, working from the outside of the spot inwards.
  4. Finish by blotting with a cloth dampened with warm, soapy water, then with plain water, and let it dry.

Test vinegar on a hidden area of the carpet or upholstery first, especially on wool or delicate materials.

Slime in hair

Don't pull hard or cut it out. Instead, work a generous amount of hair conditioner or a little oil, such as coconut or olive oil, into the slime with your fingers. Let it soften for a minute, then slowly comb it out with a wide-tooth comb, starting from the ends. Wash the hair with shampoo afterwards.

Prevent the mess

  • Play with slime only on clean, flat surfaces. Wooden and textured surfaces can stick to slime, so they're best avoided.
  • Test new slime in its container first, and fix any stickiness with activator before taking it out.
  • Keep long hair tied back while playing.
  • Put slime back in its jar and close the lid when you're done.

Quick answers

Will vinegar damage my clothes or carpet?

White vinegar is a common household cleaner, but materials vary. Always test it on a small, hidden spot first and follow the item's care label.

Should I use hot water?

Start with warm water. Very hot water and the dryer can set leftover colour, so check the spot is clean before using heat.

What's the easiest way to avoid slime messes?

Play on a clean, flat, non-wooden surface, tie long hair back, and put slime back in its jar when you're done.
