Butter Slime vs Cloud Slime: What's the Difference?
Butter slime and cloud slime are both soft, cosy textures, but they play very differently: butter spreads and stretches smoothly, while cloud slime is fluffy and pulls apart into snowy wisps.
What is butter slime?
Butter slime is soft, smooth and spreadable, a bit like icing or soft butter. It stretches into long pulls without tearing, presses flat under your palm and folds back over itself with a soft squish. Our glossy butter slimes have a shiny finish, so every fold catches the light.
What is cloud slime?
Cloud slime, sometimes called snow slime, is light, airy and matte. Pull it and it breaks into soft, snowy wisps; squish it back together and it becomes a fluffy ball again. Let it fall and it drizzles down slowly, almost like falling snow.
Side by side
- Feel: butter is smooth and creamy; cloud is fluffier, drier and more textured.
- Stretch: butter pulls into long, glossy stretches without tearing; cloud stretches into thick, fluffy ropes and then pulls apart into pieces.
- Look: butter is glossy and shiny; cloud is soft and matte, like snow.
- Best for: spreading, swirling and pressing shapes (butter); squishing, pulling and drizzling (cloud).
Which is easier for beginners?
Our shop sorts textures into levels. The beginner level is cloud creme, a thick, non-sticky slime that holds its shape like frosting (it's a different texture from cloud slime). Butter slime is rated intermediate: easier to handle than clear slime, but a little softer and stickier than cloud creme. Cloud slime is a good next step too, with a soft, snowy feel.
If you've never played with slime, start with cloud creme. Once you're comfortable, butter and cloud are both great choices, and it mostly comes down to whether you prefer smooth and glossy or fluffy and textured.

Looking after them
Keep the lid tightly closed between plays so both textures stay soft, and store them somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight. If a butter slime arrives cold and stiff, don't add activator: play with it for a few minutes and the warmth of your hands will soften it. Every slime comes with an activator spray and a care sheet.
Quick answers
Is cloud slime the same as cloud creme?
No. Cloud slime is fluffy and pulls apart into snowy wisps. Cloud creme is thick, soft and non-sticky, holds its shape like frosting, and is our beginner texture.
Can I try both without buying big jars?
Yes. All our butter and cloud slimes come in 2oz, 4oz and 8oz jars, so two small 2oz jars are an easy way to compare them.
Are they edible?
No. Slime is not edible, so do not eat it. Our slime is for ages 3 and up.
