How to Fix Hard or Stiff Slime

Slime that feels hard, stiff or tears when you stretch it can usually be brought back to life. The fix is the opposite of sticky slime: warmth and a little moisture, never more activator.

Why slime gets stiff

Slime firms up when it's cold, for example after a trip through the post in winter or straight out of the fridge. It can also get stiff if too much activator has been added, or if the lid has been left off and the slime has started to dry out.

Step 1: warm it with your hands

Before anything else, simply play with it. Squish, fold and knead the slime for a few minutes. The warmth from your hands softens it and helps stop it ripping. Many slimes that feel stiff on arrival are back to normal after a few minutes of play.

Step 2: add a little glycerin or warm water

If it's still firm after warming, slime naturally softens over time, but you can speed that up:

  1. Add a small amount of glycerin or a little warm water to the slime.
  2. Massage it in slowly, folding and squishing the slime.
  3. Keep going until it reaches the texture you like. Add more only if you need to, a little at a time.

What not to do

  • Don't use activator spray on cold or stiff slime. It makes the slime even harder, so it tears easily.
  • Don't add a lot of water at once. Small amounts are easier to control.
  • Don't leave the lid off. Slime exposed to air dries out and stiffens.

Keep slime soft

Close the lid securely after every play and store slime somewhere cool and away from direct sunlight. Cloud creme and butter slimes are the easiest textures to keep soft and squishy, so they're a good choice if you'd like low-maintenance slime.

Quick answers

Can I use activator on stiff slime?

No. Activator makes slime firmer, so it will make stiff slime harder and more likely to tear. Use warmth, and a little glycerin or warm water, instead.

Why is my slime stiff when it arrives?

Slime firms up when it's cold, for example after travelling in winter. A few minutes of play usually softens it.

How do I stop slime drying out?

Close the lid securely every time you finish playing, and store the jar somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight.
